It’s Summer So It Must Be Defoe

It is the end of the summer and so it is customary that United should be linked with a move for the perennially unsettled Jermaine Defoe.

The tradition began some years ago. Every August since, as a signature of the end of the transfer window, United will need a striker and the England forward’s name will be in the frame.

The Mail newspaper beat off all competitors yesterday to be the first to publish that the manager was “monitoring” Defoe’s situation, in light of the retirement of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has only Carlos Tevez fit to lead the line at the moment due to the foot injury to Wayne Rooney, although Frenchman Louis Saha is close to a return to the first team,” the newspaper revealed.

“Ferguson failed in his bid to lure Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov to the club this summer but is also believed to be a big fan of Defoe.”

However, summer always finishes with United failing to tempt the England striker up the motorway.

“Several clubs have expressed an interest in Defoe but there has not been a move, so far, from any of the big four,” the Independent newspaper claimed today.
